Rumours of Merle's existence originate from the West Coast, where she was originally an inhabitant of Vault 17. Like the rest of her population she was kidnapped by the Master's army to be turned into super mutants. She found herself lucky enough to slip away from her captives undetected and escaped the base where her friends and family were being held. After scrambling under the fence, she ran. She ran, and ran, and ran, and ran until she could only crawl. Eventually she found her way to Dog Town, where she learned to scavenge and fend for herself courtesy of some friendly and not-so-friendly residents.

Over time events transpired and Merle left Dog Town, heading just left of the sunrise. Along these travels it's said that she learned of her ability to communicate with the animals, although there are other disputes that it was the reason she left Dog Town. In one instance, Merle fended off a band of raiders using only crows to gouge their eyes out. Nevertheless, by 2277 she had been reported roaming various settlements along the east coast,
most notably in Point Lookout and Far Harbour. If one happens upon her, they might be lucky enough to purchase one of her fabled concoctions,
maybe even be graced with one of her stories.

Cross her, however? So much as even try to consider the notion of robbing the elderly lady? Well, one would hope you no longer need your eyes...
